Other NFL players have come back from suspension, but in terms of star status and length of suspension, I think you’ve got to go back to 1964 to find anything comparable to what Michael Vick will be attempting this season.

Derek Jeter is about to pass Lou Gehrig and become the Yankees’ all-time leader in hits. What’s surprising, I think, is that the Yankees, with all those great hitters over the years, has never had anyone with 3,000 hits.

The U.S. Open paid tribute to the great Pancho Gonzalez over the weekend, and it stirred an old memory — seeing the tennis star, still great at 37, play in Madison Square Garden in 1966.

It was a real treat to hear Doug Greenwald do the Giants radio broadcasts from Milwaukee over the weekend, filling in For Dave Flemming, whose wife gave birth to a son.

With their next loss, the Pittsburgh Pirates will have 17 consecutive losing seasons, the most of any team in the history of any of the four major North American professional sports — MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL. Can we call it the curse of Barry Bonds? I think we can.

So, the Giants acquired beefy right-hander Brad Penny for the stretch run. Six years ago, they acquired beefy Sidney Ponson for the stretch run. Giants fans hope Monday’s deal turns out better.
