Mark Sanchez is slated to become the first rookie to open the season as starting quarterback for the N.Y. Jets since 1960. If you know who that rookie was back in 1960, when the Jets were the Titans, you are an AFL trivia god.

My friend and colleague Lowell Cohn recently wrote that it’s a shame the 49ers, under the direction of head coach Mike Singletary and offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye, have such apparent disdain for the passing game in general and the quarterback position in particular. Lowell mentioned the rich tradition of 49ers quarterbacks, naming Y.A. Tittle, John Brodie, Joe Montana and Steve Young. I think Jeff Garcia belongs among them in that conversation.

Jeff Kent, on a conference call to Bay Area media, in connection with the Giants placing a plaque in his honor on their Wall of Fame, said of Barry Bonds: “He never won until he got to San Francisco.” That depends on what Kent means by “win.”

It was odd seeing Brett Favre in a Jets uniform last season, and just as odd seeing him in a Vikings uniform now, after he had played for the Packers for so long. It got me to thinking about other famous athletes identified with one particular team but suddenly appearing in a different uniform. A small sampling:
