The 49ers signed former No. 1 overall draft pick David Carr. Although Carr will seize any opportunity to start, Alex Smith figures to be the team’s starting QB.
Carr shouldn’t automatically place the role of backup in a negative light, especially here in the Bay Area. When it comes to backups, the 49ers and Raiders have had a few gems.

Elvis Grbac had a great run as Steve Young’s injury replacement in the mid-90s. He seemed to be playing every other week, and the team usually did well when he played.
