Hank Greenwald was the brilliant broadcast voice of the Giants for 16 years (1979-86; 1989-96). He sent me the following e-mail regarding Jon Miller’s winning the Ford Frick Award and a place among legendary baseball announcers at the Hall of Fame:
“I’m delighted to see Jon Miller get the award not only for his excellence as an announcer but his love of the game that permeates all of his broadcasts. I’m also pleased that Jon made it on his own without a campaign having to be undertaken on his behalf.”
Those of us who’ve had the pleasure of listening to a Greenwald broadcast know that Hank belongs among the all-time greats of the profession, too.
Hank Greenwald. Still a class act.

As much as I appreciate Miller, Hank has always been my all time favorite announcer…..always understated…always accurate. I loved
how he made no secret of his disdain for Sterling when he was working for the Yankees….class act indeed !!

Hank Greenwald gave me my love for baseball. After having no sports in my family, one day in the early 80s, I was flipping the radio dial when I came across a Giants game…the rest is history. I listened to Hank for each game, looking forward daily to the delivery of the greatest game of them all! I had the unbelievable opportunity to spend a day with Hank in the broadcast booth during one of his final calls. Something I will never forget.
With all that said, how do we find a way to get Hank the recognition that he deserves with his own Ford Frick Award?
Your thoughts.

Well, for starters, as I understand it, Hank would be the last guy who want a movement on his behalf. There are untold thousands of Greenwald fans, people who listened and cherished his broadcasts. To me, he turned baseball radio play-by-play into an art form. There are many deserving players not in the Hall of Fame (and many undeserving people in it). The best thing to do, I think, is fondly recall how much Hank’s broadcasts enriched our appreciation of baseball.
