Nellie belongs in Hall of Fame
by OldSchool
Warriors coach Don Nelson told Press Democrat columnist that he’s OK not being in basketball’s Hall of Fame because he considers himself a very good coach but not a great one.
I disagree.
I appreciate Nelson’s humility, and I believe it’s sincere. But the man has record of achievement as an NBA coach that is nothing short of remarkable.
This year he will become the NBA’s all-time winningest coach. Nelson downplays this by saying it only means he’s been around a long time. Well, you don’t win more than 1,300 games unless you’ve been around a long time. In baseball, you don’t reach 3,000 hits or 300 pitching victories unless you’ve been around a long time, but those remain monumental milestones, Hall of Fame standards.
Nelson has taken four different losing teams — the Bucks, the Warriors (in two different tenures) and the Mavericks — and turned them into winners.
With the Bucks, he won seven consecutive division titles. Thirteen times his teams have won 50 or more games in the 82-game regular season. Two of those teams won 60 games. In a 30-year coaching career, his teams have made the playoffs 18 times. And never has he had a bona fide superstar stud center.
Nellie says he may not belong in the Hall of Fame. Don’t you believe it.
